The Lavoie baroque flute headjoint is a most faithful production of the traditional traverso. It therefore offers a soft and warm sound similar to baroque flutes. Ideal for the flutist who would like to play the traverso but who does not have the time to relearn a new instrument.
The Lavoie baroque flute headjoint is made mainly of grenadilla, the wood species most recognized for its exceptional sound qualities: notably its warmth, richness and timbre. Occasionally we make them with other carefully chosen species such as mopane or pink ivory which certainly offer a unique sound palette and additional expressiveness. Each piece of wood is carefully selected to offer the highest standards of quality and beauty. Drying 5 years or more, rich wood grains and closed pores, no knots, etc.
As for the manufacturing know-how, it comes, as with the other types of headjoints that we have, from a combination of traditional turning and digital machining and also requires fine hand work. Here the headjoint is entirely baroque in aesthetic. It also has a cap-crown system made 100% by hand in wood to give the most woody sound color possible. The small oval mouth imitates the mouth of the traverse. It requires a little more adaptation for the player than the semi-baroque head but it remains ideal for the flutist who would like to play the traverso but who does not have the time to relearn a new instrument.
The outer diameter of the Lavoie headjoint tenon is 19.7 mm and it works on most Yamaha, Sankyo, Armstrong silver flutes as well as most student models. If our tenon is too loose, it is possible to adjust the connection using copper adhesive paper which we provide if necessary. As for other models of flutes, such as gold flutes, which have a 19.6mm tenon, your professional repairer can easily adjust it to your flute. We can also have it adjusted for you by a specialized technician located here in Montreal for an additional fee.
Very durable thanks to its modern design of wood and metal, it is still appropriate to warn the user that wooden heads require special maintenance due to the sensitivity of wood to humidity. They must be regularly cleaned and dried after use to avoid any deterioration. (see the care and maintenance method)
