Dizi Flute Headjoint

The dizi flute, a traditional Chinese instrument, is a centerpiece of Chinese folk and classical music. Made of bamboo, this transverse flute is distinguished by its apparent simplicity and the richness of its sounds. One of the most intriguing aspects of the dizi flute is its mouthpiece, which plays a crucial role in producing its unique and captivating sound. Inspired by these, the Lavoie Dizi flute headjoints are made with grenadilla wood and are designed to be played with a modern flute.

Structure of the Embouchure
The Embouchure of the dizi flute, also called "kou" (口), is a fundamental element that greatly influences the sound quality of the instrument. Unlike other transverse flutes like the Western transverse flute, the dizi has a unique device called a "mo kong" (膜孔) or "membrane hole". This hole is located between the mouthpiece and the playing holes, and a thin membrane of bamboo or rice (dimo) is glued to it.

The Role of “Mo Kong”
The vibrating membrane on the “mo kong” is the distinctive element of the dizi. When a player blows into the mouthpiece, the air vibrates this membrane, adding a buzzing, resonant quality to the sound. This creates a rich sound texture and a particular timbre that distinguishes the dizi from other bamboo flutes. Adjusting and replacing this diaphragm is an essential skill for dizi players, as the tension and position of the diaphragm directly affects the clarity and tone of the sound produced.

Breath Technique and Posture
Mastering the mouthpiece of the dizi requires precise technique and correct posture. The player must hold the flute horizontally, with the lips positioned so as to blow a stream of air directed over the edge of the mouthpiece. The force and angle of the breath are crucial to generate the desired sound and to effectively vibrate the membrane of the "mo kong". Blowing too hard can produce a shrill sound, while blowing too lightly can prevent the membrane from vibrating properly, making the sound flat and without resonance.

Embouchure Maintenace
Maintaining the mouthpiece and membrane is also vital to maintaining the sound quality of the dizi. The membrane may dry out or tear with time and use, requiring regular replacements. Experienced players often use a thin layer of rice glue to attach the new membrane, ensuring that it is taut and placed correctly.
