Symphonic Flute Headjoint
Lavoie wooden symphonic flute headjoints are made from species recognized for their exceptional sound qualities. Our choice of excellence is Grenadilla, Kingwood, African olive, Pink ivory, Cocobolo and Mopane. Each essence influences the sound characteristics of the flute, including its warmth, richness and timbre; and certainly offers a unique sonic palette and additional expressiveness. For more information about the sound characteristics of the different woods click here. The pieces of wood are carefully selected to offer the highest standards of quality and beauty: drying of 5 years or more, rich wood grains and closed pores, no knots, etc.
As for the manufacturing know-how, it comes from a combination of traditional turning, cnc machining and also requires fine hand work. The same principles of precision and optimization of response and intonation as metal symphonic flute headjoints are used. The dimensions of the mouthpiece, the lip plate, in fact the entire anatomy of the wooden symphonic flute headjoints is carefully calibrated to ensure optimal playing.
Durable thanks to its modern design of wood and metal, users should still be warned that wooden headjoints require special maintenance due to the sensitivity of wood to humidity. They must be regularly cleaned and dried after use to avoid any deterioration (see maintenance method).
The symphonic flute headjoint also features a cap-crown system made 100% by hand in brass with a professional silver electroplating, specially shaped to give more sound power, projection and focus of the sound to easily obtain superior projection in the orchestra as well as in large halls. It is possible to change the symphonic stopper-crown system to an antique system. This gives, in a way, two heads, two different sounds. The symphonic cap/crown assembly produces a very powerful sound perfect for playing in orchestras and in situations where the flautist must project through other musicians. The antique cap/crown set produces a very woody and warm sound perfect for chamber music or baroque music.
